Hands-On-Physics
Heat & Temperature
Core Project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Thermometer:
An oven (or freezer) thermometer with a bimetallic spiral is proved in the
HOP tool kit. As the metal spiral heats up, it expands and rotates a dial
on the front of the thermometer. This kind of a thermometer can be used
to make a thermostat.
- Thermistor:
This is a semiconductor that conducts electricity much better as it warms
up. As a result, you find that its resistance changes very quickly with
temperature.
- Construction Tools:
- sharp knife
- straight edge
- ruler (cm)
- hot-glue gun
- Electrical Tools:
- wire stripper,
- soldering iron and solder.
- digital multimeter.
- Materials:
- Corrugated cardboard and hot glue
- Thermometer with bimetalic coil (oven or freezer).
- 12VDC wall transformer (1 amp)
- small 12 V cooling fan.
- Auto tail-light bulb,
- Calibrated thermistor
- Clip leads (4)
- Hookup wire.
- Heat shrink insulation ("Spaghetti")
- 30 cm stiff iron wire
