Core Project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS

Tools Needed:

  • Standard (slot-type) screw driver
  • Cross point (Phillips) screw driver
  • Long-nose pliers
  • Drill or drill press (Fiskars hand-cranked drill works fine)
  • Drill bits: 3/32-, 5/32-, 15/32 (or 1/2-), and 5/16-inch (or metric equivalents)
  • Sharp hobby knife
  • Metric ruler
  • Marking pen or pencil

Materials:

You will need the following parts to assemble a VHS. Most dimensions are given in metric units. The exception is parts that are still more commonly available in English units in the United States (such as screws and drill bits).

Case parts:

  • 3 Angle brackets (Stanley 1" corner braces)
  • 5 #6-32 3/8-inch screws (for angle brackets and battery holders)
  • 5 #6-32 hex nuts (for angle brackets and battery holders)
  • 4 #4-40 1/2-inch screws (for breadboard)
  • 4 #4-40 hex nuts (for breadboard)
  • 1 VHS/Beta video cassette case (Pride brand from Wal-Mart)
Misc. Self-adhesive paper labels and optional bubble level vial
Note: Hardware (screws and hex nuts) is available from Radio Shack and hardware stores.

Electrical parts:

  • 1 741 operational amplifier (Radio Shack 276-007)
  • 1 3,900,000-ohm resistor (Radio Shack 271-1354)
  • 1 Green LED (Radio Shack 276-022A)
  • 2 9-volt battery connector clips (Radio Shack 270-325)
  • 2 9-volt clip-type battery holders (Radio Shack 270-326)
  • 1 Solderless breadboard (Radio Shack 276-175)
  • 2 Output terminal posts (Radio Shack 274-662A)
  • 1 Toggle switch with screw terminals (Radio Shack 275-1533A)
  • 2 7-cm lengths 20AWG red solid wire (Radio Shack 278-1222)
  • 1 7-cm length 20AWG black solid wire (Radio Shack 278-1222)
  • 1 9-cm length 20AWG red solid wire (Radio Shack 278-1222)
  • 2 9-cm lengths 20AWG black solid wire (Radio Shack 278-1222)
  • 1 10-cm length 20AWG red solid wire (Radio Shack 278-1222)
  • 1 10-cm length 20AWG black solid wire (Radio Shack 278-1222)
  • 1 #60 3M Coarse sand paper (to roughen end of LED)
  • 2 9-volt batteries

REQUIRED ACCESSORIES:

  • Voltmeter (digital output preferred)
  • Scientific calculator (with natural logarithm (ln) and sine (sin) keys)
